Site C will be a third dam and hydroelectric generating station on the Peace River in northeast B.C and offers the opportunity to be part of one of the largest infrastructure projects in Canada. It is part of BC Hydro's overall program to invest in and renew the province's electricity system. Construction on the project began in summer 2015. When completed, Site C will provide British Columbians with clean, renewable and cost-effective electricity for more than 100 years. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Acts as a senior project manager on the Site C Project, reporting to the Project Director, DamSite. The Project Manager – Balance of Plant will support the Site C Clean Energy project by having overall responsibility for project management of this major package of work. The successful candidate will be a senior experienced Project leader with a proven track record of leading large scale, complex projects associated with the construction of heavy civil, mechanical and electrical megaprojects.
  • This opportunity will appeal to experienced leaders with great depth in project management, people leadership, relationship management and issue resolution
  • You have built up your skills and knowledge over the years, thrive on complex challenges and now want to be part of a team focused on strategic thinking and planning to ensure success in delivering on important projects in a changing and complex environment
  • Senior level with superior knowledge and experience (10+ years) in a specific applicable field(s) such as long linear infrastructure development and Project Management and is a Project Management Professional (PMP) or equivalent. Strong preference for project experience involving forestry clearing, properties, permitting, and Indigenous Relations components
  • Able to manage within environments of much uncertainty, have a high degree of initiative, and work with and lead various levels of the project team to create clarity and alignment
  • Strategic thinking and excellent planning – i.e. both strategic planning and then the ability to translate into tangible actions to get things done
  • Ability to see outside the box and come up with new ways of looking at things and thereby finding new solutions
  • Excellent communication skills and engagement skills to work effectively with work package managers, senior leaders, Board, external communications including government agencies and media
  • Consistently delivers required business results; sets and achieves realistic, yet aggressive goals; consistently complies with quality, service and productivity standards and meets deadlines; maintains focus on project objectives
  • Effectively manages and guides matrixed team including design, construction, safety, environment, permitting, properties, Indigenous Relations, heritage, and project controls. Tracks team progress, adequately anticipates roadblocks, and changes course as needed to achieve team goals; provides appropriate feedback concerning group and individual performance, including areas for improvement
  • Responsible for managing scope, schedule, cost, and risk on a large balance of plant contract and equipment supply contracts for the Site C Project
  • Recognized as an expert on project management standards, policies, practices and procedures. Demonstrated understanding of BC Hydro’s PPM practices
  • Clearly establishes and communicates expectations and accountabilities; monitors and evaluates performance; provides effective feedback and coaching; identifies development needs and helps employees to achieve optimal performance and gain valuable skills that will translate into strong performance in future roles
  • Ensures comprehensive planning of project resources (financial, technical, people), schedules, scope, and budgets to support business outcomes and achieve project and business results
  • Proactively engages in consultative relationships at the strategic level, exercising a high degree of influence internally and externally; ensures that project team members develop necessary peer relationships
  • Has strong leeway for expert independent judgment outside of identified guidelines for critical project and corporate-wide problems
  • Demonstrates consistent expert-level creativity/innovation and stimulates creative thinking across the project team and organization.

Job Requirements:

  • Senior level knowledge in a specific field such as, project management, business or Peng requirement in electrical, mechanical or equivalent
  • Exceptional leadership ability
  • Extensive project management knowledge, skills and experience
  • Experience as a project manager of a major project or a portfolio of projects
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of BCH's business and the interdependencies of the various departments
  • Excellent report writing, communication, facilitation, negotiation, presentation and interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional planning, organizational, analytical and problem solving skills
  • Bachelor degree in a relevant discipline such as engineering or business
  • Project Management Certification or eligibility to obtain
  • Considerable knowledge of the BCH’s PPM practices experience and proven track record in delivery of a large integrated construction project including electrical, mechanical, and protection systems
  • Field experience engaging with field operations and construction management
  • Good knowledge of other fields sufficient to provide good support to project managers
  • Proven leadership ability
  • Well developed communication, facilitation, negotiation and interpersonal skills
  • Well developed planning, organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Position location is at 333 Dunsmuir and travel to the Site C Construction Site on a regular basis is expected
  • A condition of employment for this job is that you maintain your Driver's License: Class 5 In Good Standing as travel across the province will be required
