JOB DESCRIPTION

Duties:

* Plans detailed field surveys, including assessments of aquatic, terrestrial and atmospheric conditions, in accordance with approved methods to determine, record and report on biological processes, such as seasonal concentrations, relative abundance and habitats of fish, wildlife, migratory birds, for use in estimating populations, growth patterns and seasonal habits.

* Organizes and undertakes a variety of technical field and office investigations related to construction, operations, maintenance and waste management / pollution prevention; conducts field reviews and inspections, gathers data and information, recommends study approach and provides input into the identification of methodologies required to deal with the associated environmental issues.

* Understands and communicates practices, licensing and other environmental requirements, including regulatory and other arrangements, permits and licenses, etc., on new or revised projects and studies, to government agencies, life sciences specialists and related associations; participates in communications with agencies, First Nations, public meetings and/or training or presentation sessions as required. Provides training in waste management methods and a variety of other environmental management techniques.

* Researches, assesses and documents background biological data such as material from consultants’ reports and proposed project areas; conducts field inventories, records observations and selects alternative methods as field conditions dictate; monitors environmental aspects of studies; assesses data and writes reports; makes site specific recommendations to team members in accordance with established protocols; follows up with contractors and team members to ensure approved work is carried out in accordance with legal, regulatory and safety requirements.

* Participates in various programs related to the development and administration of environmental components of BC Hydro operations such as vegetation management, mitigation measures for construction and maintenance projects, permits, license and other regulatory requirements.

* Is deployed to the field to respond to unforeseen environmental concerns by assisting in mitigation by performing activities such as laying out booms and throwing down oil pads.

* Performs all the functions of lower-level jobs within the Natural Resource job hierarchy and provides technical direction to staff in lower-level jobs, contractors and staff working on related projects.

* Performs duties of a minor nature related to the above duties that do not affect the rating of the job.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

* Completion of a Bachelor degree in Natural Resource or Environmental Studies with at least one (1) year of relevant work experience or as an equivalent, completion of Technologist Diploma in Natural Resources or Environmental Studies with two (2) years of relevant work experience.

* Must be eligible for the Biologist in Training designation with the College of Applied Biology.

* Valid BC Driver’s License required.

* A condition of employment for this role is to maintain your Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing.

* Please note in regards to being eligible for membership with the College of Applied Biology we are also willing to consider those that are qualified/eligible with another Professional Association at this time.

* Please note this is a Group 9 MoveUP Full-time Temporary (FTT) MOU#15 opportunity for approximately 1 year located in Fort St. John (Site C).

* This location may be eligible for a Remote Incentive of 12%. Remote Incentives are paid biweekly to Full-Time Regular employees and Full-Time Temporary MOU15 Site C employees working in eligible remote locations.

* This position is under MOU#15 of the MoveUP collective agreement to provide environmental monitoring and construction support services to the Site C Clean Energy project.

* Experience with extensive driving, including off-road driving, and previous all-weather outdoor work experience will be required.

* In follow-up to the above in regards to driving this role will likely require substantive amounts of highway/resource road driving daily, could be up to 200km.

* The Site C project will provide 1,100 megawatts (MW) of capacity and about 5,100 gigawatt hours (GWh) of energy each year to the province’s integrated electricity system. Project components include an earth fill dam, diversion tunnel, generating station, spillway and associated structures, an 83-kilometre-long reservoir, re-alignment of six sections of Highway 29, and two 77-kilometre transmission lines along an existing right-of-way connecting Site C to Peace Canyon.

* As part of the selection process, applicants may be required to take a written test/assessment.

* During working shifts the monitor must reside in housing located close to the work area.

* Spends approximately 60 to 70% of time in the field.

* Exposed to all types of weather conditions at work sites that may be remote.

* Regular exposure to river and lake conditions when performing field work.

* May be required to operate boats, snowmobiles, ATVs, 4×4 trucks on rough access roads.

* Climbs or walks on uneven, steep and/or rough terrain in all weathers during field work.

* BC Hydro conducts pre-placement medical checks of applicants entering certain positions to help safeguard BC Hydro’s workplace. As part of the selection process, you may be required to demonstrate successful completion of a pre-placement medical check.

* Please be advised that this role has been assessed as safety sensitive and pre-qualification alcohol and drug testing will be required as a pre-condition to employment.
